The Non-philosophical Business Case for Decentralized Data Infrastructure in Web3
Pure ideological benefits just aren't going to move the needle for real adoption
One chart to TLDR for you the tangible benefits of decentralized data infra (storage + retrieval + compute) in web3.
I've been scratching my head to come up with a succinct way to explain "why web3" in the data context, because the mere ideological benefits of "censorship resistant" or "decentralization" are simply not enough to drive mass adoption.
Benefits needs to be much more material and tangible. Here's an attempt using the framework from my consulting days.
To build a business case for new tech/tool adoption, they either need to
1. increase the topline/revenue via
A. greater usage
B. new category/product creation
C. scale faster
2. reduce the bottomline/costs via
A. more functional efficiency
B. fewer cost drivers.
Below is a table visual of the high-level Topline Growth + Bottomline Reduction opportunities via decentralized data framework using IPFS & Filecoin
I will follow up with a mini-series to double click on each lever. Hit me up if you want to discuss & got things to add to it!
